My name is Jon Buck and I play the guitar. I started playing guitar at the age of 9 after three failed attempts at learning the piano. I dabbled with it for a couple of years before meeting legendary UK session guitarist Colin Pincott at age 12. He inspired me to work hard enough at it to be able to do it for a living myself one day. Fast forward to now and that’s all I’ve ever done – making a living out of playing the guitar.
The most important lesson that I learned from those early days was how to be versatile as a player. To be happy and have the ability to play all styles was something that Colin instilled in me and I feel fortunate to have had that advice. On a gig it can get you out of a hole, as a session player it can help you nail the right lick and as a teacher it can help you to always be able to help and move with your students.
I’m lucky enough to have always been able to keep the wolf from the door by making music. Sometimes there are those times when the wolf is a little closer than you’d like, but that’s when versatility can come in handy. I’m a guitarist first and foremost, I teach, I compose, I play at events, I do sessions for other artists, I arrange other people’s tunes in to my own style, I play in bands, duos, on my own, I’m really not fussy.
I just love to play guitar and have fun making music. That can be a blessing and a curse, but I always remember what an old guitarist buddy of mine told me when I was starting out in the industry, ‘it’ll be hard work but it sure beats working.’
