Jon taught me, in some capacity, for the best part of 8 years. I began drum lessons at the age of 9 adding on guitar lessons from age 12, both in group settings at school. I moved to private lessons with Jon at about 14 when I decided I wanted to start grades, and had a high interest in pursuing music as a career.
I was always into music and the idea of learning an instrument one day, and once I started at age 9 I was hooked. I know that a big part of this was because of my teacher. Throughout these years, Jon had a way of guiding me through my musical journey without it seeming like a chore, or like homework. I realise now that he recognised my enthusiasm, and always knew how to challenge me enough, making sure the fundamentals of my playing were being hit, whilst keeping things captivating and fun.
In our private lessons, we covered material from blues and jazz tunes (some arranged by Jon himself), to Muse. Pieces are written out clearly to understand for students at any level. Much to my teen attitude at times, I was always encouraged to learn theoretically what was going on too; chord progressions, particular extended chords etc.. At the time I didn’t know why this would help. I can confirm now, help is an understatement (!!!)
Jon’s ability to teach small children, mature musicians wanting to brush up on their playing, and anyone in between, is a rarity. I cannot recommend his lessons enough. I will always cherish the early years of my learning, thanks to Jon.
